Incident Data AnalysisPosted By Robert Tucker on Monday, January 09, 2012 at 18:15
Since the inception of this site in 2003, we have made it a priority to show you our incident response numbers. We now have a good set of data from the last 9 years that we can now graph out our averages and see what we could learn from the numbers. Well the results were very interesting to say the least. The first graph shows our total incident response from 2002 to 2011. We included 2002 only because we still knew the number from that year. Our responses have increased steadily since 2004 and continue to go up, with the exception of 2009. The second graph shows a comparison between our EMS and Fire Incidents. Please note that MVA's or Motor Vehicular Accidents are factored into both sets of numbers.
The third graph we see the ART or Average Response Time. This is our average time it takes us from the time of dispatch to the time the first truck is on scene. As you can see, we have decreased our response time by 1 minute from 2003 to 2008. However, since 2009 the ART has started to inch back up but remaining lower then where we started. We do not know why the ART is increasing at this time.
The forth graph is the AIPD or Average Incidents Per Day tracks right along with our first graph. Finally the last graph shows the AMPI or Average Members Per Incident. We have increased this metric by over 132% since 2003.
The numbers show just how much our department has improved our incident responses over the last nine years. Keep up the good work!

HFD Educates 1200 StudentsPosted By Robert Boren on Friday, October 21, 2011 at 12:08Well over a month now, the Huntertown Fire Department has been working on fire prevention programs through out the response area. With 12 different schools ranging from pre-school to high school, the HFD has reached out to well over 1200 students with fire safety tips and fire prevention guidelines. Almost daily, crews have been going to schools or having students come to the fire station to talk about: Calling 911, Stop-Drop-Cover your face-and Roll, Having an Escape plan, Smoke Detectors, and many more topics on fire safety. Along with the programs, students have been able to meet Freddie the Fire Truck, walking around the fire truck, and trying on the fire gear. If anyone would like more information about fire safety tips, smoke detectors, or a tour of the fire station, please stop by the station.
New Multi-Gas DetectorPosted By Robert Boren on Thursday, September 01, 2011 at 01:23Just last week, the Huntertown Fire Department took possession of a new gas detector that has the ability to read five different gases. The new detector can read Oxygen, Lower Explosive Level, Sewer Gas, Carbon Monoxide, and Ibutyln. Total cost of this new detector was $0. Chief Feely worked with with Chief of Special Operations MacIntosh, from the Fort Wayne Fire Department, to bring these detectors to five county departments at no cost to the receiving departments. A detector of this type could cost in the upwards of $3000. Thank you to Chief MacIntosh and Chief Feely for helping all the departments to save a great amount of money and still receive the new detector.

Retired Firefighter Dan West served as the Huntertown Vol Fire Chief from 1987-1991. He helped our organization develop better trainings, recruitment, as well as our proficiencies within the emergency services for this area. Regrettably, after only several years of retiring from the Fort Wayne Fire Department and moving to Florida, we have learned that Dan has recently been diagnosed with Stage 4 Renal Cancer. Our hearts are saddened and would like to ask the community and area emergency responders, to keep Dan and his family in your prayers.

Honoring A Fallen FirefighterPosted By Robert Boren on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at 20:03On Wednesday, June 15th, the Muncie fire department had a great blow to their tight knit family, firefighter Scott Davis lost his life while fighting a fire. Five Huntertown fire fighters, joined along with approximately 1000 other firefighters from across the area, made the trip to the city of Muncie to pay their respects to the fallen brother. As firefighters passed by the flag draped casket to pay their respects to firefighter Davis's wife and parents, the family quickly learned of the brotherhood that thrives in the fire service. After a few presentations of metals given to the family, and emotional words spoken by friends and family, all firefighters alined the street in front of the Horizon Center to follow in a walking precessional behind the fire engine carrying brother Davis to his final resting spot. As the precessional made it's way through the downtown streets of Muncie, many people lined the streets or roof tops to stand in silence to give their respect to the family and other firefighters. Some of the public covered their hearts with their hands, held american flags, wiped away tears, or just stood in awe of the out poor of support that was given in a time of need. A special thank you goes out to Chief Mike Feely, Chief Boren, Captian Mueller, Private Falls, and Private Brososky for attending and representing Huntertown FD with honor.

Live Fire TrainingPosted By Robert Boren on Monday, April 04, 2011 at 15:56On April 2nd, HFD took part in putting on live fire training. We were able to obtain an old home that the land owners were going to have torn down to make room for a new home. After filing for the proper burn variance through the state, we were able to preform live fire training. Crews rotated through four different stations; Observation- Fire fighters are able to sit in the room with a fire and watch fire behavior along with being able to identify the different stages of fire, along with seeing off gassing. Attack- Crews were sent in to search for the fire and put the fire out. RIT (Rapid Intervention Team)- A crew was standing by in the need for any potential problems that my occur. Rehab/Pump Ops- Crews were able to take their packs and coats off to cool down, drink water, and also go over basic engineer responsibilities. Everyone did a great job and we had 6 room burns and then finally burnt the home down.
The fire department is always on the look for any homes that need tore down and that pass a small inspection. If any land owner wishes to look into having a house taken down, please contact the fire department. Below are a few pictures from the training burn.
New Monitor on 2768 AmbulancePosted By Mike Feely on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at 18:57We now have a different monitor on E-95 (2768) which has replaced one of the Zoll Monitors. We now have a LifePak 12 which is compatible with TRAA as well as the hospitals. We will be having an "In-Service" tomorrow night 3-30-11 @ 7pm. Here are some of the benefits of this Monitor:
PRO'S
- It has a memory so you don't always have to remember to print your chart, you can print after the run,,, We don't have the luxury with the Zoll
- Its more user friendly to operate according to those that have used it
- We would have uniform defib pads with TRAA and our surrounding departments - Currently we have to attach a converter piece if TRAA is going to use our Pads and generally they rip ours off and use their Life Pak
- Swapping supplies between us and TRAA on scene would reduce supply costs
CON'S
- Truck 1 would have a different monitor than truck 2
HT's Increase Firefigher SafetyPosted By Mike Feely on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 19:28Huntertown Fd now has 6 HT's located on Engine 92 and 6 HT's on Rescue 98 to promote firefighter safety on emergency runs. Every Firefighter should now be able to get off the rigs with an HT so that they can better communicate on scenes as well as have the potential to use the radio to call out a Maday... Althought I hope we never have to use these for a Mayday, we now have the resources to keep our members safer on scenes, as well as better informed on what our Incident Action plans and strategies are. It is important to note that unless you have urgent communications, only the truck officer should be talking on the radio... These radios will also help us work traffic at scenes. A special thanks goes out to Brad Wolfe for installing all of these charges for free as well as Carl Dickes for making the brackets!!! Nice Job Guys !!!!

Homeowner Responsible for Saving 2 Dogs through the IcePosted By Mike Feely on Monday, February 28, 2011 at 22:35Huntertown FD was dispatched on 2 dogs that were through the Ice on a pond at the intersection of Fogal and McComb Rd on Monday afternoon. Sherm Meshberger looked out his window and noticed that 2 dogs had wandered on his pond and due to the warming weather and thin ice, broke through and were struggling to get out. He immediately called 911 and sprang into action by getting a garden tool and worked from his pier breaking the ice so the dogs could make their way back to shore. Huntertown FD was on scene within minutes of the call only to find that Sherm had already rescued the dogs. The dogs were then returned to their owner and were not injured. Thanks to Sherm Meshberger for his safe and quick action!!

Ice Rescue Training - Huntertown & FWFDPosted By Mike Feely on Friday, January 07, 2011 at 17:58
Huntertown FD & FWFD (Engine 16) met at a pond in the Perry Lake addition to practice Ice Rescue tactics and skills. There were several elements that we wanted to train on such as:
· Types of rescue equipment both organizations have for water/ice rescues
· Discuss capabilities and responsibilities (first in vs second in)
· Safety precautions for the rescuer as well as victim
· Usage of the sling retrieval method versus the rescue sled
· Approaches to unconscious versus combative/hypothermic victims
· Team work and hand signal signs for rescuer and victims return to land
We cut a hole in the ice and initiated drills to see how timely we could extricate a victim that was approximately 100 – 150ft from land. Both agencies worked great together and had the victims back on land within 5 minutes of entering the ice… Nice Job A Shift !!!

Fire Prevention MonthPosted By Mike Feely on Monday, October 18, 2010 at 18:55
The month of October is Fire Prevention Month and has kept the Huntertown Fire Department busy with daily school visits and in station education classes to the school age children within our coverage area. We strongly encourage parents to discuss with your kids what to do in the event of an emergency and to implement and practice a plan. Here are some topics that may help you to discuss with your family:
· Who to call (911) for Police, Fire, or Ambulance
· Implement and practice a plan (2 ways out)
· Have a meeting place outside
· Parents make sure you have a fire extinguisher in your homes (for small fires – Pull Pin, Aim Nozzle, Squeeze trigger, Sweep base of fire)
· Never re-enter structure
· If your clothes catch on fire,, 1. Stop 2. Drop 3. Cover your face 4. Roll Roll Roll
· Test your smoke detectors (change batteries 2 times per year)
Although you can’t always prevent a fire, you can increase your chances of survival and avoid injuries by having a plan, and practicing that plan at least once a year. If you have any questions, you can contact our prevention bureau at 449-3696 between the hours of 9am – 5pm.

MDT's Donated by Fort Wayne FirePosted By Robert Boren on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 16:02
Thank you goes out to the Fort Wayne Fire Department for their donation of four mobile data terminals (MDT’s). On March 16, 2010, Chief Mike Feely picked up the donation of the MDT computers from the Fort Wayne Fire Dept. These computers will be used on the fire and EMS apparatus to help crews better locate addresses by having on board up to date mapping along with having call information at their finger tips. Having the mapping program on the computer will help crews better locate homes, neighbor hood retention ponds, hydrants, neighbor hood swimming pools, and many other locations. Along with mapping, fire and EMS crews will be able to access a data base of information regarding the incident, and location that they are responding to. Pre-plans of local business and schools in the area can be loaded into the computer to help give in coming crews on best access to building, closest water source, possible population of the building and other useful information. This donation has helped save the department and tax payers roughly $12,000. This project would have not been possible with the help of the FWFD.

A strong showing from the members of the Huntertown FD contributed to a
sucessfull Pancake & Sausage Breakfast Fundraiser on Saturday May 30th.
Approximately 24 members worked together to make this event a well organized
effort. Members started arriving at the Fire Station at 5:30am to begin setting
up then started cooking before the doors opened up at 7am. We took this
opportunity to not only feed the public, but also to provide information on :
CPR, Health and Safety, Fire Prevention, Tornado Preparedness, reflective
addressing signage and much more including information on how to become a member
of our Proud Fire Department. A HUGE "Thank You" goes to the Community for
showing an overwhelming show of support for our fundraising cause. At last
count we profited roughly $1,000.00 This money will go toward providing
advance training to our members. An extra thanks to EMS Chief Rich Sellers and
Pvt. Derreck Schwehn for the countless hours and legwork necessary to put this
event on. Great job to all who helped including Rescue 178 and Truck 67 for
coming to our Station to cover any runs. After you click on this article, click

Water Flow Damages Brand New BuildingPosted By P. Feely on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 04:00
At approximately 9:30pm Saturday March 21, Huntertown FD and Northeast FD were dispatched on a General Fire Alarm. On arrival F-91 had nothing showing, but a water flow alarm bell sounding at the rear of the large structure. Further investigation identified water coming from the Side 3 first floor ceilings at a back door. Northeast E-171 forced entry and secured the standpipe to stop the water flow, since there were no signs of smoke or fire in the structure. Water damage was significant as it extended throughout the brand new building that opened March 2nd 2009.
Hands-On Confined Space Training with FWFD S.O.R.TPosted By P. Feely on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 05:00
On Wednesday February 25th @ 19:00 Several Depts joined forces to be involved with a Mock scenerio requiring the use of the Special Operations Response Team. The initial dispatch was on an ambulance run on a "man down" with no additional information given. On arrival they found a "worker" down a mobile semi tank trailer unconscious. The crew was to identify the "confined space" requirements and acknowledge the need for resources that exceeded our standard response. Command was established and then worked closely with the FWFD S.O.R.T. and mutual aid companies.
The training was a great opportunity to ask questions and work as a team with other agencies. The training wasn't without challenges, and equipment issues, but that made the scenerio more realistic. As problems and failures play into emergecies its our job to stay focused and react accordingly to keep ourselves and the public safe. More importantly we learn about capabilities and resources within other neighboring Fire Departments.
Special thanks for the strong participation from Huntertown,Washington,Northeast and Fort Wayne Fire S.O.R.T. Especially Pvt. Gabe Silva for being our victim for the 2 hr Event. "Train Together, Go Home Together"

We have found that its great not only for fitness, but camaraderie and competition. Here you can see everyone hard at work playing floor hockey.
Multiple FD's Participate in S.O.R.T. TrainingPosted By P. Feely on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 05:00
On Wednesday January 14th Huntertown FD hosted many departments as FWFD went through their S.O.R.T (Specialty Operations Response Team) equipment and capabilities if needed by the County FD's. Capt. The entire lecture focused around a common theme in the fire service.....SAFETY. After the SORT informational lecture, we went to the bays for multiple SORT stations, showing their equipment and how works. Our thanks for all the following Fire Departments that participated in training : Huntertown FD, Washington Twp FD, Cedar Canyons FD, St. Joe Twp FD and Fort Wayne FD.
